Gemola, a volcano in the middle of the Po Valley (2)

Today we continue our interview with Lucio Gomiero (click here for part 1) who owns the Vignalta estate in Colli Euganei together with Paolo Guzzo and Luciano Salvagnin.
Doctor Wine: Which are your best markets in Italy and abroad?
Lucio Gomiero: Vignalta wines are distributed both at home and abroad. The most important market in Italy is obviously Veneto, while abroad our chief markets are the United States and Canada, followed by Japan, Russia and Switzerland.
DW: Colli Euganei would appear to have all the cards it needs to attract wine lovers: it is easy to reach, being near Padua, and it has a volcanic soil which all wine lovers esteem. So what is lacking?
LG: You’re right. We are a stone’s throw from an art and cultural city like Padua and close to Venice as well, plus we are home to one of Europe’s biggest spas. I suppose you could say what Colli Euganei lacks is teamwork to promote and exalt the area’s food, wine and hospitality sector. Between ourselves we say that the Colli Euganei are “Italy’s best-kept secret”.
DW: A secret that should be shared, don’t you think?
LG: Without a doubt. In our small way we are trying to get ourselves known as one of the best areas for quality wine production.
All the following wines are a blend of 75-80% Merlot and 25-20% Cabernet Franc that ages in new, 500-liter Allier and Nerves oak barrels for 24 months and then at least for another 12 months in the bottle
