The fruit here is riper, not evolved, and telling of the year. The aroma has camphor, amaretto, hazelnut ice cream and a touch of iron. The mouthfeel is broad and at the same time very clenched, neither soft nor too dry, only more gentle thanks to the tannins. The flavor is more ‘American’ with wood at the center of the mouth making it a bit annoying and distracting for a Barolo. The finish is better and closes quite robustly. Purists may find my rating a bit generous and the wine’s big fans will think I’m crazy. When it came out it was heralded by American critics who gave it a rating worthy of a good Petrus.
