Grignolino: the noble rebel

As many as three days dedicated to one of the oldest and noblest grapes of Piedmont, Grignolino, with the presence of more than center producers, 129 labels for tasting, thematic masterlcass and more playful moments with live music and proposals of traditional dishes.
Lots of young people came from all over Piedmont and neighboring regions for the event Grignolino: the noble rebel, many Ho.Re.Ca operators on the Monday day dedicated to operators and many, above all, foreigners confirming that Monferrato is among the fastest growing wine tourism areas in this last five years. And at the same pace so are the wines, the current production is around 2.5 million bottles with the Doc Grignolino d'Asti exceeding one million bottles followed by the Doc Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese with about 435 thousand bottles. Also on the rise is Doc Piemonte Grignolino, which marks a +7.3 percent over 2021, breaking through the million-bottle mark.
Analyzing the Enogea Map, edited by Alessandro Masnaghetti, we learn that the area is divided into two sectors: a western and an eastern one. In the first we find La Valcerrina, Serralunga di Crea, Odalengo piccolo, Murisengo Alfiano Natta, Gabiano and Rubino di Cantavenna (the latter give their names to two other specific appellations that to Barbera see an addition of 5-10% and 25% Freisa and Grignolino, respectively). In the second sector, the eastern, there are instead San Giorgio Monferrato, Casale Monferrato, La Valle Ghenza and La Valle Grana. In the Masterclass staged last March 11, 14 wines were presented in the battery, five of which were produced between Vignale and La Valle Grana, two in La Valle Ghenza and the remainder in the above-mentioned areas. And if on the Monferace we found a very high level, net of the different vintages presented, the same cannot be said about all the Grignolino 2021 and 2020, in some cases volatiles and oxidation deviated a bit nose and palate. But the area is growing and we are sure that in time we will find a more important production solidity.
This second edition of the event, organized by Ais Piemonte with the Asti and Casale delegations, was supported by the Barbera d'Asti and Monferrato Wines Consortium, the Colline del Monferrato Casalese Consortium, the Grignolino d'Asti Doc-Piemonte Doc Grignolino and Monferace Producers' Associations, the Gran Monferrato Consortium, with the patronage of the Municipality of Grazzano Badoglio, while the gastronomic aspect was taken care of by the Silos restaurant in Turin.
