Krug 2004, così luminoso e così Krug

According to founder Joseph Krug, his Vintage wines were Cuvée des circonstances, wines strictly related to their year. Vintage 2004 is a Champagne of great balance and tension.

Among vintage Champagnes, which by definition are expressions of a specific year, there are wines that more than others express the producer’s style, which in turn is the undeniable key to interpreting the harvest. Through their unique style, some Maisons and Récoltants are able to offer wine lovers Champagnes with a distinct identity that goes far beyond any choices made in the vineyard or winery.

The Krug philosophy demands that any productive choice be made by the parameters set by founder Joseph Krug, who established that there needed to be a Cuvée N°1, in other words a Grand Cuvée – a blend that could offer maximum satisfaction no matter what the year – and a Cuvée N°2, a Vintage champagne – wines inseparable from the characteristics of the harvest which he defined Cuvée des circonstances.

There is no doubt that the circumstances of the 2004 harvest were incredibly favorable, as evidence by the fact that this Vintage from Maison Krug was dubbed luminous freshness. It was a generous harvest that produced grapes with magnificent expressiveness and a nice balance between the overall acidity and the alcoholic potential, determined by the ripeness of the fruit. This generosity was prepared for by the 2003 harvest which was very difficult because the vines were under great stress due to spring frosts and summer heat and humidity. Vintage 2004, although it may not match 2002, is a year that promises to age well and so it was not surprising that the Maison was practically the last one to bring its Vintage 2004 to the market (where 2009 was already present).

In homage of the extraordinary alliance Krug has struck with Father Time in order to create its Champagne, the Maison has decided to package Vintage 2004 in a coffret called “Les Créations de 2004” together with its 160ème Edition Grande Cuvée, a blend of 121 wines from 12 different vintages between 2004 and 1990. All the details for this latter wine are available through the Krug app (Krug ID n°214031), the Maison’s futuristic invention which offers all the information available on each bottle with a click.

The tasting held by Oliver Krug for its official presentation to the press was an experience of the Krug style, one which Vintage 2004 incarnates in all its luminous splendor.
