È nata una nuova perla: Ferrari Perlé Bianco Riserva 2006

The newest cuvée from Cantine Ferrari, Perlé Bianco Riserva, was given celebrity treatment at its official presentation, in Milan at Villa Necchi Campiglio, organized in collaboration with Vanity Fair. It was a debut in grand style that reflected the pride the Lunelli has for this latest milestone, a new TrentoDoc in the Perlé line, a Riserva born under the favorable star of the 2006 harvest. Choosing the name was probably the easiest thing the Lunelli cousins had to do given that only Chardonnay grapes were used for the wine and the precedents set by Perlé Nero, made exclusively with Pinot Noir, Perlé and Perlé Rosé.

The name Perlé was adopted by none other than Giulio Ferrari at the beginning of the 20th century when Trento was still part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and German was the official language and the wordperlend meant ‘fizzy’. The most important decision, however, was perhaps that of presenting Perlé Bianco as a TrentoDoc Riserva. This came about because, as enologist Ruben Laretis explained, the 2006 harvest was so magnificent that 104 months aging on the lees gave Perlé Bianco a generous and refined complexity that needed time to be appreciated.

The reason why the 2006 harvest was so exceptional was explained by Marcello Lunelli, the technical chief at Cantine Ferrari which he inherited from his uncle Maurizio together with the winery’s secrets. The growing season began late after a cold winter and was followed by a mild spring, he said, while during the summer there was an excellent balance between precipitation and sunshine with dry conditions for those vineyards situated between 400-700m above sea level that have southeast and southwest exposures. Ruben Laretis added that the grapes from the 2006 harvest stayed crunchy when they ripened and had a level of acidity that produced a precise and flavorful wine.

A total of 30,000 bottles of this balanced, fresh and tasty TrentoDoc Riserva Perlé Bianco were produced and nine years on the lees gave this wine an expressive elegance when it was disgorged. The Lunelli family has proved yet again how the constant quest for excellence is the only path to success.
