Made from Nebbiolo grapes (in this area known as Chiavennasca) harvested slightly after they have ripened and matured in large barrels for 18 months. The wine has a garnet-ruby color with a garnet-orange edge and the aromas are initially subdued, warranting the use of a decanter. Once the bouquet opens there are scents of rose, aloe and a purée of slightly dried prunes but it never becomes too defined. The mouthfeel has an extreme finesse and is surprisingly dry, without the sweetness of the raisin-like notes, while the ample tannins are never drying. Like all great Valtellina wines, the finish is broad with fine balsamic notes from the wood.
