Chardonnay for all seasons: the damsels (Burgundy N°1)

Chardonnay is cultivated the world over and with some excellent results. However, it is inevitable that if one wants to drink the absolute best then it is inevitable that they go to the district of Beaune and neighboring areas. This because of a slew of unique features, the extraordinary combination of terroir and human skill that here produces the greatest white wines in the world, and not just those made from Chardonnay. My personal opinion is that these wines should be prohibited to those who have not reached a certain level in their knowledge of wine, this in order to not spoil their views of other wines. An additional factor to take into consideration is the price of these wines that has made them more an object of desire than a source of sensorial pleasure.
I cannot say this enough: the minerality, balance and elegance of Puligny wines; the expressive force, sunniness and opulence of Chassagne wines; the boldness and creaminess of Meursault wines; and the salinity together with the freshness of Chablis make this area unique in the world for white wine.
Together with the structural ‘stereotypes’ described above there is another variable, unique in its own way, involving the style of the winemaker with producers giving an interpretation that is so personal to make them unrepeatable among unique wines.
