Il Greco di Tufo di Giancarlo Barbieri di Sertura

Giancarlo Barbieri is proud of the results he has achieved with seven vintages of this Greco di Tufo which demonstrate its propensity to age.

Giancarlo Barbieri’s founded his Sertura estate in 2002 and it is here where with pride and passion he carries on with his project to enhance the importance of the Irpinia area of the Campania region. An agronomist with top-notch training and experience, he has developed a productive philosophy that is centered on the characteristics of the land and bringing them out in his wines. He is a firm believer that a wine acquires its personality and typicity in the vineyard, while the winery serves only to exalt the natural characteristics of the grape variety. A traditionalist and a purist, he makes his wines from native varietals from which he produces three, single-grape DOCG classified wines: Greco di Tufo, Fiano di Avellino and Tauasi. The grapes are cultivated in the best areas of Irpinia in order to obtain wines that come close to excellence.

For the Greco di Tufo, one of Italy’s oldest varieties and that produces wines with a propensity to age, he chose the area of Santa Paolina which sits at an altitude of 400m above sea level. Here the excellent climate conditions, together with the mineral-rich, clay-lime soil, produces the typical and elegant citrus note that distinguishes the complexity of the wine’s aromatic profile. The two-hectare vineyard has a sunny exposure and the vines are Guyot-trained with a density of 4,000 vines per hectare and produce a total of 8,000 bottles a year.

The following vertical tasting, conducted by Luciano Pignataro, was of the seven vintages from 2015 to 2009 of which only the last three are available on the market. The tasting was paired with local meats from the “master craft butcher” Mario Laurino and cheeses from Carmasciano. The traditional aromas and flavors of the foods were in perfect harmony with the wines.
