Chianti Classico in the area of Greve

On the hills overlooking the Greve valley are located the vineyards belonging to this Additional Geographical Unit.
As many of us know, last year saw the birth of an important project of subdivision of the Chianti Classico production territory in more limited and homogeneous areas, the Additional Geographical Units. "Among the objectives - they declare at the Consortium - to strengthen the communication of the binomial wine-territory, to increase quality in terms of identity and territoriality, to allow consumers to know the origin of grapes and, last but not the least, to stimulate the demand through the differentiation of the offer".
The areas identified within the production area of Chianti Classico are eleven, delimited according to criteria such as enological recognizability, historicity, notoriety and significance in terms of volumes produced. They are - just to remember them - starting from north-east, to be read as if it were a book: San Casciano, Greve, Montefioralle, Panzano, Lamole, San Donato in Poggio, Radda, Castellina, Gaiole, Vagliagli and Castelnuovo Berardenga.
As soon as the bureaucratic process for the approval of the modifications to the production disciplinary will be completed, these areas will be indicated on the label and will be applicable, in this first phase, only to the Gran Selezione type. However, in presenting some Chianti Classici "for every budget", we thought of respecting the geographical location of the wineries, also in order to get used to think in terms of smaller portions of territory.
Let's start from the Greve area, with three historical estates: Castello di Querceto, Tenuta di Nozzole and Vignamaggio. This UGA includes the hills which overlooks the river Greve, where most of the vineyards are concentrated, in particular in the southern and central part.
In Lucolena, at the north-eastern borders of Chianti Classico, still today rises Querceto Castle of the sixteenth century, in which is incorporated part of the walls of the pre-existing medieval castle. Since 1897 it is owned by François family and nowadays Alessandro Francois produces, since decades, austere and long lasting wines, result of a high quality viticulture and of very traditional methods in the cellar.
In 2000 the historical Folonari family, owner at that time of Ruffino, divided the many properties and Ambrogio with his son Giovanni established a pull of estates in Tuscany located in the main appellation of origin areas. In Chianti Classico there is Tenuta di Nozzole, in Greve in Chianti, from where are produced wines of great importance, from Pareto to the new Chianti Classico. From the Tenuta del Cabreo, not far away, come the other famous IGT wines produced by the winery.
The change of ownership in the hands of the architect Patrice Taravella, of Italian origin but who has lived for a long time in France, has given Vignamaggio a remarkable vivacity and change of pace with important acquisitions in the surroundings of Greve in Chianti. Always of the highest level the Chianti Classico wines with the Mona Lisa who smiled from the beginning at the Gran Selezione. Legend has it that in the property of Villa di Vignamaggio Leonardo da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa. Very nice and cozy is their resort La Pensione with 19 beautiful rooms.
