Lapio Wine Tasting (1): Taurasi

December 17 and 18 saw the first edition of Lapio Wine Tasting, an event dedicated to the wineries of Lapio, a town in the province of Avellino that is considered to be the heart of Irpinia wine production. At the center of attention were the wines from the two DOCG Fiano and Taurasi appellations and produced by the estates Colli di Lapio, Rocca del Principe, Cantine Romano, Filadoro, Feudo Apiano, Femia and Tenuta Scuotto.

The aim of the event, which is set to become an annual occurrence, is to discover and promote an area that has unique and unrepeatable characteristics and that for over 2,000 years has demonstrated its vocation for wine.

The theme of this first edition as “when a territory can become a brand” and this served as the basis for an intense debate among sector experts. “Working as a team” emerged as the main message in the debate, in particular in regard to identifying and promoting the zone and its wines.

Taurasi was a prime example of a territory or location becoming a brand given that this wine, made from Aglianico grapes, is known throughout the world by the name of a town: Taurasi. It has become an ambassador for an area that has its own identity at the heart of Irpinia. But the idea of a “territorial brand” must ensure that each local winemaking reality benefits from a continuous flow of information towards potential markets that highlights the qualities of the brand itself.

The following reviews are of the Taurasi we tasted. In the next installment we will look at the Fiano di Avellino wines.
