A star is born: Le More Bianche
With his 2015 harvest, Alessandro Bovio decided to make wine from the Nebbiolo grapes of his Vigna San Bernardo vineyard in the Roero DOCG appellation. And he turned out a masterpiece.
When an old wine taster comes across a new producer, one who is just getting started and is turning out impressive wines, it restores his faith in what he has chosen as his vocation. This happened to me recently during Roero Days, one of the loveliest and most interesting wine events in Italy.
During a dinner I met the young producer Alessandro Bovio who had presented a truly interesting Roero 2015. His estate, Le More Bianche (The White Mulberries), is named after a centuries old tree that stands out in his vineyard and produces sweet berries. For some years he had worked as a consultant but with the 2015 harvest he decided to try and make wine from the grapes of his 2.30-hectare vineyard, half of which is planted with Barbera and half with Nebbiolo.
His first wine was made using the Nebbiolo from his Vigna San Bernardo vineyard that is cultivated following sustainable methods. His winemaking style is also inspired by his respect for the environment but above all his wine is very good, technically impeccable, the product of intelligent and, at the same time, “high” craftsmanship. In short, it is a masterpiece that we strongly suggest you go out and buy, also in view of its more than reasonable price considering what you get.
