Like a famous movie star on a red carpet, the arrival on the market of Trentodoc Riserva del Fondatore Giulio Ferrari 2006 left everyone gobsmacked.

Rumors about it in the word of wine were abounding and so even though it had only just come out, not only did the wine generate a lot of attention but it almost immediately sold out. The wine was Riserva del Fondatore Giulio Ferrari Rosé that made its debut with vintage 2006 after sitting on the lees for over ten years. This was a record for an Italian traditional method rosé, the rarest of all, of which only 5,000 bottle were made. This made it practically impossible to find and the Holy Grail among passionate wine lovers.

The debut took place less than a month ago during a splendid evening at 16th century Villa Margon, bathed in pink light, where the Lunelli family presented the latest and most awaited Ferrari creation. It was a performance that only “Giulio” could pull off, the legendary Trentodoc that has always been distinguished by a remarkable precision and harmony as well as a great balance.

Giulio Ferrari Rosé was born under a lucky star, that of the extraordinary skill of Ruben Larentis, who is Ferrari’s “chef de caves” given that to call him just an enologist or technical director would do him an injustice. I was fortunate to sit beside him during the presentation dinner and could see how moved he was about his latest creation. When I asked what had been the most difficult challenge in making this wine, he responded: “My imperative is consistency. I must never forget the roots, dreams and goals of the founder Giulio Ferrari, first, and those of Bruno Lunelli who, in 1980, paid homage to the founder by dedicating a Riserva to him. They both strongly believed in excellence and strived for it without compromise. Added to this responsibility is my own goals: tocreate Ferrari wines that can unmistakably express the spirit of the land and that have a recognizable style that brings together flavor, elegance and complexity as well as a great propensity to age”.

Giulio Ferrari Rosé would appear to underscored this mission with even greater emphasis. The soul of mountain Pinot Noir – 80% of the blend of which half is fermented on the skins with Chardonnay representing the remaining 20% - adds golden-pink reflections to the color, while the very fine and luminous effervescence seems to herald the lovely intensity of the aromatic profile, which immediately strikes the senses with its complexity, nuances and great elegance. The bouquet has floral scents and those of spice and fruit that join together in a refined and inebriating cloud that has notes of dog rose petals, mallow, hibiscus and rhubarb preserves, dried tamarind and tangerine and a pure streak of wild mint and anise nuances. In the mouthfeel, the citrus enhances the tonic note from medicinal herbs and anise flavors and then little by little emerges a saline sensation that perpetuates the fruit with a wrapping sensuality. The creamy and persistent finish extends the aftertaste and the absence of any dosage is never missed thanks to the maturity of the fruit that completes the wine and gives it texture.

This is undoubtedly a wine of great class that confirms the high level of quality achieved at Ferrari and sparks the imagination of what future versions of the newborn Giulio Ferrari Rosé could be like (97/100 – 120 euros a bottle although speculation has already driven up the price to over 250 euros).
