Krug Vintage 2002: Preview of a perfect vintage
On February 3, in the incredible halls of Milan’s Villa degli Atellani, which houses the La Vigna di Leonardo museum, Olivier Krug opened his presentation by saying: “I am here to answer a question you journalists and Krug-lovers have been asking me for almost four years – when will Krug 2002 come out?”. And so after such a long wait, Maison Krug finally presented in Italy its Krug 2002 Champagne, which was preceded last year by the 2003 vintage that at the time was deemed more ready to leave the Maison’s cellars in Reims. Krug 2002 was nicknamed ‘Ode to Nature’, a statement that definitively underscores the fundamental role a perfect year has in creating a great vintage Champagne.
Every Krug vintage is created with the idea of expressing the exclusive character of a single harvest, capturing the unique essence of the year, and this was also true of Krug 2002. It was a perfect year, one made extraordinary by the exceptional balance of the grapes, with the three varieties of Champagne in a state of grace after ripening to perfection. The preview for the Italian press came after its presentation in the United States and London and after Michael Edwards, the most authoritative Champagne wine critic, declared in the January edition of Decanter that Krug 2002 was “in a league of its own”. After its vintage 2003, a year that was the hottest since 1882 and put great stress on grapes in Champagne forcing an August harvest, Krug returns the market’s attention to the Maison’s distinctive style with a vintage that those who are never happy have defined as “a little too perfect”.
Harvest took place with the grapes in perfect condition with harmonious maturity, precise freshness and enviable health. And thanks to being free from complications caused by difficult harvests, Eric Lebel, Maison Krug’s Chef de Caves, was able to create this triumph of style and nature’s generosity, a true masterpiece that we will remember and enjoy for a long time to come.
In the presentation of Krug 2002, Oliver Krug gave the Krug ID to unlock the secrets of the wine on App Krug (ID: 414071) before initiating the tasting accompanied by the soundtrack of ‘No love dying’ by Gregory Porter. A sublime experience.
