A noble bubbly
Primo Franco is a “guardian of Prosecco” who for decades has produced wines of undisputed quality at this family’s estate Nino Franco, named after its founder. In recent years he has literally knocked us out with versions of Grave di Stecca, a simply extraordinary, Glera-based and ‘single vineyard’ wine. This year’s version was awarded a Doctor Wine ‘faccino’ headcut in our Ultimate Guide to Italian Wine after obtaining a rating of 95/100. He has hit the bullseye again with his Prosecco Superiore 2015 which he named ‘Nodi’ (knots). The grapes come from vines that are at least 70 years old and which were restored with care by the ‘genius’ Marco Simonit. In this case the “vine whisperer” brought back an ancient vineyard to allow for the production of a Prosecco Superiore that from now on will be at the top of its category. This wine is a true wonder of which only a few thousand bottles were produced and I was fortunate enough to have sampled it in a preview tasting.
