II profumo del mosto a Fontanavecchia

The over-100-year old Fontanavecchia estate is situated in Torrecuso, in the Sannio district, where over the years wines made from Aglianico and Falanghina have exemplified the territory.

Welcoming and with taste are two words that describe the Fontanavecchia winery of Liberto Rillo in Torrecuso. From his father Libero inherited ancient winemaking traditions as well as a desire to allow the world, through wine, to appreciate this green corner of the Campania region. And he has done this not only as a winemaker but also as chairman of the Consorzio del Sannio producers’ association.

The hill that hosts the estate is embellished by the presence of the Calore River that runs through the Sannio district and the view it has of Mount Taburno. The hill has a thick vegetation of olive groves and vineyards. Fontanavecchia is some 150 years old and after years of working with his father, Libero took overl in 1998 and began to enhance its value.

The estate’s productive philosophy fortunately reflects that of many others in the region of Campania and is centered in exalting quality and biodiversity. Falanghina and Aglianico are the most cultivated varietals and here have ancient roots. The composition of the soil is clay and lime and thanks also to the area’s temperature variations between day and night the grapes are ‘imprinted’ by his extraordinary land and this comes out in the wines they make. The wines, in fact, are expressive and have a long lifespan without losing the characteristics of the terroir.

Fontanavecchia currently has 20 hectares of vineyards that are as manicured as gardens and have excellent exposures. The estate definitely deserves a visit and during harvest you can enjoy the aroma of the must as you stroll through the vines.

The estate produces around 100,000 bottles a year: reds, whites, a rosé and two sparkling wines, one of which is made using the traditional method.
