Marramiero and a jeroboam night
A few weeks ago there was a wonderful evening at the Tordomatti restaurant of Adriano Baldassare, who recently moved to Rome from Zagarolo where for years he was a beacon for good Lazio regional cuisine. The star of the evening were the wines from the Marramiero winery in Abruzzo that all rigorously came in 4.5-liter jeroboam bottles and were presented in person by Enrico Marramiero, together with enologist Romeo Taraborrelli. These wines with their great personality together with a choice menu made for a pleasant and enjoyable evening.
The Marramiero winery is situated in the Masseria Sant’Andrea farm estate in Rosciano, in the heart of the Abruzzo region, on a hill at an altitude of 270 meters above sea level. The Marramiero family has been cultivating grapes, mostly native varieties like Montepulciano and Trebbiano together with some ‘international’ varietals, for over 100 years. Marramiero wines are the product of a history that unites a love of the land and attention to progress, dedication to work and respect for the oldest winemaking methods but using modern technology.
The estate’s ancient name was Fonte Fumante (Smoking Spring) because it used to have a sulfur spring that is now extinct but which inspired the names of most of the wines, which have a ‘Dantesque’ flare, except for the white Altare. Urban legend says that when the Trebbiano was tasted for the first time (the first vintage is 1994), everyone present fell to their knees as if before an altar, hence the name.
Among the wines presented were a sparkling Marramiero Brut 2006, a white Altare 2005, a red Inferi 2001 and, as the cherry on the cake, Livia, a vino cotto (cooked wine) made according to the typical Abruzzo tradition.
