Gelso della Valchetta, buon vino alle porte di Roma

Gelso della Valchetta is a five-hectare estate just north of Rome immersed in the heart of the Veio Park, in a valley blessed with a stream, forests and pasture land. This is a young estate in an area rich in history and nature.

It all began in 1997 when the dream of Marco and Mapi Caldani began to take form with the planting of a vineyard on their family estate. But it was not until 2003, with the help of enologist Graziana Grassini, that they first bottled their two wines: Il Gelso and Il Lilium (The Mulberry and The Lily).

The estate is run today by Marco’s daughter, Flaminia Caldani, and the enologist is now Maurillo Chioccia but the approach remains the same, organic even if not certified, to produce good wines.

The two wines, both made with international or ‘noble’ grapes, are well-made, very drinkable and impressively express the variety they are made from: Chardonnay for Il Lilium while Il Gelso is a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
