Fattoria Lavacchio: Experience Rufina
The idea was to create a self-sufficient farm that totally respected nature and produced wine, olive oil, vegetables, grain and meat as well as offer hospitality.
Podere Lavacchio was once owned by the Strozzi family of Florence but was acquired in 1971 by the Lottero family, who were originally from Liguria but were involved in the fish sector in Monaco. The original idea was to have a country farm for holidays but when their daughter Fay become involved the project became more detailed.
The model of a self-sufficient Tuscan farm thus began to take shape and aside from producing wine and olive oil they planted a vegetable garden to produce food not only for themselves but also for the restaurant they created on the estate. They also planted other crops and started raising pigs and everything was done following criteria of eco-sustainability.
Everything is done very well and is extremely respectful of Tuscan tradition at this holiday farm and it can now host 80 guests in four separate buildings with two swimming pools and horse stables. The estate also hosts a food shop to sell its products and it is open non-guests as well who can then have a picnic on the estate’s grounds. Also present on the estate grounds is a pottery studio run by the Innocent family where guests can take lessons.
The original four-hectare vineyard has expanded to 25 hectares and the winery is a bit small to meet its needs but it is limited by restrictions imposed by the fine arts authority. Some of the wines produced there are certified organic without any use of sulfites. A host of wines are produced some of which have their defects while others, in our opinion, are very solid and reliable, like the ones reviewed here below. Visiting Lavacchio is both an intellectual and emotional experience.
