The voice of the land
In our tastings for the Essential Guide of Italian Wine we had to be ‘mean’ because the essential nature of the guide made drastic selections necessary. Thus we tasted some very good wines that do not meet the strict guidelines we had set. This was the case in Bolgheri where we had to exclude wines that I would like to propose to you, starting today with a Syrah varietal from Batzella, an estate that is not well-known but produces some excellent wines.
The estate was founded in 2000 by Khanh Nguyen and Franco Batzella with the intention of producing wines that struck a balance between boldness and elegance, characteristics that distinguish Bolgheri wines. The estate has eight hectares of vineyards with a sandy-clay soil and they produce classic Bolgheri DOC wines: a Superiore, Tam, which is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc; two Bolgheri Rosso, one a Cabernet varietal, Pean, and the other a blend with Syrah, Digia; while the DOC appellation ends with a Bianco and a Rosato. Vox Loci Syrah is an IGT created in 2007 on the advice of some experts who convinced the owners to bottle a varietal Syrah.
