The aromatic finesse of Loazzolo VT 2012 Borgo Maragliano

Located a stone’s throw from Canelli, on the border between Langa Astigiana and Albese, Borgo Maragliano produces a late harvest Moscato di Canelli wine that is a must to taste: Loazzolo 2012.
For some unexplainable reason, even for the leading marketing and communications gurus, the Vosne-Romanée of Moscato d’Asti, Loazzolo (pronounced Loazzòlo), is a semi-unknown name even among the most passionate wine lovers. It was here, a stone’s throw from Canelli, on the border between Langa Astigiana and Albese, where the steep vineyards benefit from a warmer microclimate than the local average, that enologist Dante Scaglione began experimenting in 1985 to create a Moscato Passito dessert wine made in part with grapes that have raisinated on drying racks. The result was immediately amazing.
Today, aside from the standard-bearer wine Forteto della Lula, named after Scaglione’s estate, there are other Loazzolo DOC wines made by handful of producers who make small quantities of this Moscato that has an enviable average quality.
Loazzolo has the exceptional aromatic finesse of Moscato d’Asti, with vaguely Mediterranean aromas, but with flavors from a Middle-European late harvest wine (it would be interesting to do a comparative tasting with a similarly made Alsace Muscat). In a nutshell: a masterpiece.
