Tavel l’Anglore, a very great rosé
Tavel l’Anglore 2015 from Domaine de l’Anglore has been defined by Le Monde as one of the greatest rosé wines in the world. Flag-waving aside, it is truly a great wine.
While the appellation is that of the south Rhone, geographically Tavel is in Languedoc and is distinguished by several surprising traits. First of all it is totally dedicated to the production of rosé, then there is the utmost yield per hectare, 48 hectoliters, and finally the cap imposed on alcoholic content of no more than 13.5%, which says a lot about how easy the grapes ripen.
The zone is not far from Avignon to the north, one which many experts consider to be the best in all of France for the production of rosé. Eric Pfifferling is a kind of prodigious producer in Tavel, a former mechanic who is in love with the land and who initially went into beekeeping before becoming a national star for producing natural wine.
Both the vineyard and the winery are organically run without any clarification or filtering but utilizing carbonic maceration. The result is that Tavel is considered, according to the prestigious publication Le Monde, to be “one of the greatest rosé wines in the world”. And it is, in fact, a great wine.
