Montepepe Bianco 2014 is not an obvious wine but one that at the same time is delicate yet has pluck and this makes it an extremely pleasing drop.

Montignoso is on the Montepepe hill, in the province of Massa Carrara, with an ample view of the sea. It was here that Stefano Poggi fell in love with and restored an 18th century villa that had once belonged to Carlo Ludovico, Duke of Lucca. Today it hosts a luxurious Relais hotel and winery and beginning in 2004 the some five hectares of old terraced vineyards leading up to the villa, held up by stone walls, were replanted.

During his time, the Duke had brought in an enologist from France to oversee wine production and today Montepepe wines continue to mature in the villa’s cellars.

Being set between the Apuan Alps and the Ligurian Sea, this area has a microclimate that is particularly favorable for winegrowing with its mild winters and breezy summers. Together with the local varietals Vermentino (white) and Massaretta (red) the vineyards also host Viognier and Syrah that add complexity to the traditional wines. The estate’s agronomist and enologist is Federico Curtaz, a well-known expert in the area between Tuscany and Liguria.
