Montemagro Piccinin, a Durella white made like a red
A Lessina white wine macerated on the skins that is brazen and explosive: Veneto Bianco Montemagro 2015 from Daniele Piccinin.
Lessina is a hidden Veneto treasure. Its historic area coincides with the Alpine foothills of upper Verona province, a cool zone that is unfortunately still little known to wine lovers. The area produces some excellent, at times exceptional, sparkling wines that may not have much body but are perfect as an aperitif/ the appellation is Lessina Durello.
The area’s historic varietal is the white grape Durella that has an excellent acidity making it apt for producing sparkling wine but it is also rich in polyphenols and thus excellent to make wine macerating on the skins like a red wine.
Daniele Piccinin began making wine in Sa Giovanni Ilarione in 2006. With the support of Angiolino Maule, a paladin of the national natural wine movement and president of Vinnatur, Daniele has made Montemagro, a white Durella wine macerated in the skins, one of his mainstays.
The protocol for ‘natural’ wines calls for using indigenous yeasts, no temperature control during fermentation and the absolute minimum use of sulfites. The result is a wine that not only reflects the way it was made – which remains predominate – but also expresses the tenacious character of the Durella grape. Not all white grapes are suited for maceration and the secret lies in doing this correctly.
