Montecillo and l’Edición Limitada del Rioja 2010

I have to admit that the Bacchus 2017 contest, where I served as a judge, was organized in an excellent way by the Unión Española de Catadores. And this not only in regard to the logistics of the competition but also the collateral events that allowed all the participating tasters (Masters of Wine, buyers, sommeliers and trade journalists from all over the world) to get to know the wine world in Spain.
Among the many opportunities offered (of which I will write in future articles), was a preview tasting of Edición Limitada 2010 from MontecilloRioja which is set to go on the market. Montecillo is an estate in the Osborne group in Fuenmayor, the village with the oldest winemaking tradition in the Rioja Alta region, which hosts the Ebro River. The clay-chalk soil here is rich in iron and the microclimate is ideal. Don Celestino Navajas Matute was aware of this when he founded the estate in 1874. In the decades that followed his descendants studied in France (Bordeaux and Beune) and Penedés and expanded the estate with the intention of bolstering quality. In 1973, the estate was acquired by another famous Spanish wine family, Osborne, who still own it today.
The over 800 vineyards parcels benefit from the latest technology which allows them to monitor the health of the vines, their growing cycles, the various stages of the ripening of the grapes and their final quality.
In the aging cellar there are over 20,000 French and American oak barrels which are continually renewed.
