Lauro 2015 Poderi Mattioli, a Verdicchio Riserva from the Moglietta vineyard

Castelli di Jesi Verdicchio Riserva Classico Lauro 2015 from Poderi Mattioli is from the estate’s oldest vineyard, Moglietta, which gives it depth.
The hills of Serra de’ Conti and Montecarotto, on the left bank of the Esino River that runs through Castelli di Jesi, produce Verdicchio wines that are more open, full and sunny. Those from Montecarotto are slightly more floral while those from Serra de’ Conti are more fruity, but here we are splitting hairs, and both have the vegetal notes (anise, mustard and wild mint) typical to the varietal. Many top estates get their best grapes from Serra de’ Conti, at least in part, for their select wines: from Garofoli’s Podium to Bucci’s Riserva.
Poderi Mattioli is a small, family estate run by two brothers, Giacomo and Giordano Mattioli, which focuses on the region’s greatest wine. Their winemaking style is the traditional one that calls for fermenting at a temperature that is never too cold, the use of stainless steel vats for aging and keeping the wine on the lees for a short time.
Riserva Lauro is made from grapes from the estate’s oldest vineyard, Moglietta, with vines that are 45 years old. It might have been the clay soil or the age of the vines, but this 2015 did not only not suffer from the year’s lack of rain but it interpreted the harvest in the most complete way.
The estate is very lovely and the two brothers are delightful.
