Terra Aspra from Tenuta Marino

Tenuta Marino is an estate in Basilicata that has been organic for almost 30 years and produces a truly interesting Primitivo: Terra Aspra (Rugged Land).
The vineyards for the Tenuta Marino estate are in Basilicata's magnificent Pollino National Park and the estate also cultivates fruits and olives as well as raising horses and cattle. The estate has been organic since 1990.
In the beginning the estate focused on producing fruit while winemaking, Francesco’s great passion, began years later after they discovered an old vine wrapped around a 19th century military tower. The variety turned out to be the red wine grape Aglianico and constituted the start of a new area of production.
The estate currently has 26 hectares of spur and cordon-trained vineyards that have a rather high density. Aside from Aglianico, they also cultivate Primitivo, Syrah, Merlot and the white wine grape Greco. The wines mature in French and Slovenian oak barrels. The winery itself is very beautiful and functional, temperature and humidity controlled, and sits perfectly in its surrounding environment with a fantastic view. We were most impressed by their Primitivo Terra Aspra 2011.
