From the heart of Sicily
There are winemaking areas of Sicily that are away from the limelight, overshadowed by the magnificent wines of Etna and those by certain historic producers. But the whole island’s winemaking vocation is evident when you travel and visit the lesser known areas, including the province of Caltanissetta. Here, in the hills between the provincial capital and Canicatti, is the Lombaro Vini estate. It has 23 hectares of vineyards situated at an altitude of between 600 and 650m above sea level where only two varieties are cultivated: the white Catarratto grape and the red Nero d’Avola. This because brothers Gianfranco, Roberto and Salvatore Lombardo, along with their enologist Tonino Guzzo, consider them to be the best suited to bring out the characteristics of the land.
The soil is a chalky clay and the climate is dry and hot. Last year they finished building a new winery and also restored an ancient fortified building that was recently acquired and is surrounded by land with wonderful exposures. All this is evidence that this is an expanding estate where hard work will pay off.
