An intense white from Valais

The wine appellation of Chamoson is in the Canton of Valais in western Switzerland. The vineyards there are situated at an altitude of some 500m above sea level and sit at the foot of the Alps and southeast from Lake Geneva. The climate is rigid and relatively dry and given the steepness of the terrain the vines are cultivated on terraces upheld by dry walls made mostly from granite and filled with layers of chalky and clay soils that are the sediments left by melting glaciers over thousands of years.
Daniel Magliocco’s estate extends for six hectares which is quite large for the area considering most farms have no more than a hectare of land. Founded by his father Silvio, who immigrated here from Italy in the 1950s, the estate is today run by Daniel and his family. Their style is based on simplicity: only a few winemaking frills and a maniacal care of the vineyards. Their aim is to produce wines that are free of any glitter and which can reflect as much as possible the characteristics of the grape variety. This excellent Petit Arvine is produced as a private label for one of the world’s best restaurant: Hotel de la Ville in Crissier, home of Chef Benoit Violier.
