An ancient wine
I discovered Cantine Belmesseri almost by chance, as often happens, about a year ago during a tasting for the Bancarel’Vino 2015 Prize dedicated to products from the province of Massa Carrara. Lunigiana is not the first area in Tuscany one thinks of when the subject is wine but be it because of climate change and rising temperatures, which is to the advantage of cooler zones, be it for the effort of certain people to boost the area, something interesting things are coming out and should be watched. This is true not only of Cantine Belmesseri, which I am glad to see is expanding, but also Fattoria Ruschi Noceto and Podere Fedespina which are demonstrating that the potential exists thanks also to varietals that only grow there and which are producing some very interesting results.
Cantine Belmesseri is in Pontremoil and the estate sits at an altitude of 280m above sea level with the vineyards, only a couple of hectares, planted in a clay-sandy soil with a deep gravel subsoil rich in minerals. The vineyards have a southeast and southwest exposure.
