Amedeo Cavalchina, the prince of Custoza

Cavalchina is a pioneering estate in Custoza and its owner Giuletto Piona is an excellent producer as evidenced by his Custoza Superiore Amedeo 2015
Giuletto Piona has been making excellent wines for decades but strangely has not received the media attention he deserves. He has two estates, La Prendina in the province of Mantua and Cavalchia in Custoza, which is responsible for introducing the name of this area made famous during the reunification of Italy into the appellation of the zone in 1962.
And it was Giuletto who named his showcase wine, Custoza Superiore, after Amedeo of Savoy who was wounded at Cavalchina during the Third War of Independence, in 1866, when the army of the House of Savoy, which by then was Italy’s to all effects, was defeated by the Austro-Hungarians.
Amedeo, on the other hand, represents a wine victory, a great and very territorial white, the product of refined winemaking techniques which involve fermenting each varietal separately and blending the wines only after they have respectively aged. The price should be considered as incredibly reasonable considering the wine’s organoleptic value.
