A very original Chardonnay
‘Caught’ between the great reds of Montefalco and the new (and deserved) trend towards Ciliegiolo, Orvieto struggles to establish a place in the heart of the majority of wine lovers. This is a shame because the vineyards around this splendid city in Umbria ‘feel’ the influence of Lazio and produce dry white wines and dessert wines that have unique personalities and have been praised since the Middle Ages.
Together with a couple of other estates, Decugnano has been in the forefront of the appellation for at least a dozen or so years and was the first to produce a traditional method bubbly there and, above all, Italy’s first noble rot wine. Although the area mostly produces Grechetto, here we look at a Chardonnay, one that expresses this terroir, naturally. If you like saline whites, those that are neither hard nor cold in their expression, then this is the wine for you.
