This is the only single estate, DOC Italian wine, a privilege granted by law to this wine legend. An icon among Italian wines, it is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc. Tuscan aristocracy, of which the Incisa della Rocchetta family is a full-fledged member, often and willingly used international grapes – which have been present in the region for centuries – to make their own wines for personal consumption. In Bolgheri, at the Tenuta San Guido estate, the soil is particularly good for Cabernet, a mix of sand and rocks. And Sassicaia is undoubtedly one of the best wines in the world made from this grape, on the same level as many top ones in Bordeaux.
Although 2010 was a cool year and not as good as the previous one, it nevertheless produced a good Sassicaia even if not one of the best. Its complex nose has a classic citrus note of pink grapefruit and then cherry and currant, spicy touches and a tad of rhubarb in the background. The mouthfeel is fine and elegant, with silky tannins and a very nice acidity. The length is wonderful. While this vintage is ready earlier it will nevertheless have a long life.
