Sangiovese makes up 75% of this wine the remaining 25% of which is a blend of Malvasia Nera, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine ages for 24 months in barriques, which have been used two or three times before, and it has a lively yet somewhat monotonous ruby color, which seems to contradict the age on the bottle. The aroma is quite distinct and some may find it similar to the Pinot Noir from the cooler areas of New Zealand. The bouquet has green notes of citronella and vetiver on a background of cherry and violet together with a hint of dark chocolate from the wood. The mouthfeel is also particular with a broad and lively, yet not soft, attack before coarse but sweet tannins emerge followed by a long and not especially drying finish with an aftertaste of cherry and citronella. All this is “verticalized” by a very pleasing acidity in a medium body.
Rufina reserves from cool years, like this 2013, have a propensity to age long but we suggest you drink this one right now because it is really good.
