Whenever I have Monfortino in my glass I cannot help but remember the time I was lucky enough to taste a 1961. According to Doc (along with Vinogodi who is the only other person I know who can taste the best the world can offer with such nonchalance) this was the best Italian wine of all time (see the link to Daniele’s memorable article about it). However, this 1999 also had a lot going for it. It was enchanting at first whiff, an infinite progression of classic scents that penetrated the senses with the grace and precision of a Bolshoi dancer. There were notes of rose and Parma violet, balsamic sensations and accents of tobacco, blackberry and cacao nuts, broad, intense and clear aromas. Once the nose was conquered all the mouth could do was surrender unconditionally. The attack was rich, ample and then began to expand with vigorous tannins that made it clear this wine will last for who knows how long. The mouthfeel was sensual, stimulating, elegant with a never-ending drinkability (the bottle may finish but the memory does not).
If I were to compare this wine to a movie star I would say it was the evergreen Sean Connery. But if it was a mythological figure then I would say it was the ever-resourceful Ulysses.
