A moving experience. Its orange color is relatively bold and so one would assume that this wine, no matter how distinguished it may have been, had gone off. A big mistake. This 1924 is among the best Monfortino vintages of all time. Since I risk not doing it justice with my description, the following are the observations of my friend Augusto, a department chief at Rome’s Università del Sacro Cuore. ‘’My fellow companions at today’s tasting will forgive me if, while I fully agree with them that the 1961 Monfortino was the best of the tasting, I cannot help forget, no matter how hard I try, another vintage. This one had an orange color brightened by luminous reflections and a lively aroma with scents of fallen autumn leaves and the smell of the ground they have fallen upon. There were also a notes of wilted rose petals, black tea, nougat, coagulated blood and fungus. The mouthfeel was wrapping, the acidity still upheld a body in which resolved tannins allowed you to alternately identify of sweet and spicy notes which together with elements from bottle aging gave the wine a lightness, pleasantness and persistence that made it truly unique and unforgettable. This wine, thanks to a cork that kept it perfectly sealed and the impeccable way it was stored, won its battle against oxidation and time. It will forever be impressed in my memory’’.
Price: Whatever an auction will fetch (I have refused 1,000 euros for one that I have).
