The lovely tasting ended with La Gioia, a wine that was the brainchild of Palmira Dunkley, a strong-minded and determined woman of Neapolitan origin. What she wanted was to create a great wine with a strong personality, something like a Super Tuscan, but was discouraged in this by her husband. Taking advantage of John Dunkley’s temporary absence, she hid the wine in barriques. In the end she got her way and they began to produce this wine in 1982. It is a varietal Sangiovese with an aroma of vanilla and sweet spice and is very deep and balsamic both in the nose and mouth with flavors of wild, dark fruit and notes of violets.
