The grapes for this wine were picked at the start of November and the wine aged for 12 months in stainless steel vats and then for 30 months in new-wood barriques. The color is an opaque and impressive eggplant-ruby color and the bouquet initially has saturating aromas from bottle aging of damp earth and tamarind syrup. These are then followed by notes more typical of the varietal: cherry purée on a background of violet and licorice. And while the personality of the aroma may “only” be excellent for such an ambitious wine, the mouthfeel does not disappoint. The attack is solid and creamy with a bold concentration, doughy tannins (just a tad dusty), with sensations of walnut husk at the center of the mouth and a finish that is warm but not burning and an aftertaste of tamarind, leather and cherry purée. The generosity of this great Montepulciano is of the highest level and while this vintage is presumably at its peak, the estate says it will be good for another 10-15 years.
