This is a small estate that is showing great signs of improvement; from its three and a half hectares of Chianti Classico vineyards it offers wines that reflect faithfully the terroir of Gaiole and in which elegance and power are in perfect balance. Here we are on soils that are rich in clay and which enjoy excellent exposure to sunlight even though the altitude is considerable. We are, in fact, at 450 metres above sea level. In spite of this, strict grape 5ELECTion and skilful vinification under the supervision of expert oenologist Stefano Chioccioli allow the Gioffreda family – even in a “cool” year like 2008 – to offer an excellent product.
Made from 90% Sangiovese with a small proportion of Merlot, the 2008 Riserva Foho has a handsome and quite bright concentrated ruby colour; its nose displays classic hints of cherries and blackberries, as well as an intriguing floral note. There is also an intense and attractive suggestion of tobacco, and we are not aware of any “green” notes. The fruit on the palate is not muscular but nicely articulated around a refreshing (but not obtrusive) vein of acidity and is satisfyingly supported by well-integrated tannins. The finish is persistent, well-knit and broad, and echoes the floral hints on the nose.
