Signorvino Valpolicella

On the occasion of Vinitaly we went to Signorvino Valpolicella, the venue a few kilometers from Verona surrounded by vineyards. According to an established and successful format, the goal is to make the world of Italian wine usable to the general public.

Say you're in the mood for a glass or a bottle of wine and to nibble something maybe after a day of work or for an evening with friends... well this is the perfect place.

Signorvino is now a chain of wine shops with kitchen, a real wine supermarket born in 2012 from a brilliant idea of Sandro Veronesi. A wine lover's paradise that has nearly 2,000 all-Italian labels, clearly and neatly arranged on wooden shelves and at an incredibly affordable price.

As of today, there are a great number of stores throughout Italy opened with the franchising formula that characterizes the group to which it belongs - Calzedonia - and although I had promised myself to go to the new Roman store opened not so long ago, we happened to dine at Signorvino Valpolicella just during the days of Vinitaly.

Already the scenery that presents itself to you upon arriving is breathtaking, vineyards behind and all around...road signs indicate that just a few kilometers away are wineries with prestigious names. A heart of wine beating at the gates of Verona, the city of wine precisely. From inside the room, large windows open onto a panorama that enchants you and is so relaxing that the weight of the workday instantly disappears.

Let us now come to the "substance" because once you have recovered from the apotheosis of bottles to choose from for your watering hole, you must also put your stomach at peace.

Lots of choice among top-quality charcuterie and cheese boards. Favola mortadella with gnocco fritto, giardiniera, focaccia genovese and more. Also appearing are fritti to share, the calamaretti spillo and torta rustica. A few first and second courses for those with a bigger appetite, but personally in a place like this, where wine is the mainstay, I would stay on the deli counter as a choice.

The wait staff is extraordinarily friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The presentation scenic and enticing. Taste, variety and soft ambience the watchwords. Not to do anyone any wrong among the desserts we see both Sicilian cannoli and sbrisolona as well as among the first courses there are both tortelli all'amarone and mezzemaniche alla carbonara, if you really miss the air you breathe under the Dome.

A young, fresh, convivial and fun environment. Note that there are nice phrases on the plates that already put you in a good mood. I don't like to use Anglicisms but as they say now this is a winning format and the facts are proving it.

To make a long story short Signorvino is multifaceted, a super wine shop that however does not have the detached and somewhat know-it-all aplomb of the usual wine shops that for many remain obscure meanderings with so many labels that tell most people very little. The goal here is to make the megagalactic world of Italian wine "approachable" to the general public without too many frills. So whether you want to choose bottles for home or stay here and have a few nice bottles uncorked in company, you've come to the right place (bottle prices don't change between take-out and on-site consumption, ed.). Opt for a nice selection of cured meats and cheeses, accompany everything with a few pieces of fried dumplings, and I assure you that you will certainly spend some very pleasant hours.
