Roscioli: four aces in the capital

For 50 years it has been a guarantee of quality and in the past decade has risen to become one of the best wine and food venues in Italy.
Although oceans of ink and floods of words have been used in praise of this Roman pearl of food and wine, they will never suffice. It is now some 50 years old, having been founded as a bakery at the start of the 1970s by Marco Roscioli, the father of current owners Alessandro and Pierluigi. The latter are the ones who, especially over the past decade, are responsible for making this the best wine and food venues in Italy.
A bakery, delicatessen with restaurant, café and after-hours Rimessa, there are the four solid pillars that have in a certain way set the benchmark in the Italian capital. With its Roman heart, Italian soul and international scope, the Roscioli brothers have made this into an authentic juggernaut that they direct with the ability of a symphony conductor thanks to entrepreneurial know-how, an incredible quest for valid products, wine expertise and a solid background in food.
THE RESTAURANT & DELICATESSEN
Entering this “shop” of this “delicatessen” – I use inverted common because the words are a mere understatement – a customer feels as though they have been blinded by the light on the road to Damascus. It is almost like entering a cathedral decorated with beautiful mosaics with details that you want to set to memory even though everything together is a splendor to behold. Roscioli is this and much more, jar after jar, label after label, bottle after bottle.
It is a magnificent bazaar of enthralling colors and aromas. There are over 300 types of cheese in the display case to the left and behind are almost 200 varieties of prestigious cold cuts, while to the right are shelves after shelves of countless types of wine. The staff is professional, courteous and well-versed in offering advice, pairings and explanations. It makes me feel like a kid in a toy shop after my mother has told me to choose whatever I’d like: a sensation of pure joy. Pleasures like this are rare indeed. And although there are only a few tables, beneath the shelves of wine, the food of restaurant is a guarantee.
THE BAKERY
The bakery is just around the corner, not even 50m away but you can “smell” it before you see it. A fragrant and comforting aroma that seems to come out of the past. Here, too, the display cases are filled with different delights, a wide variety of breads, breakfast brioche, donuts, cakes and cookies like your grandmother would make. But it is at the pizza counter that Roscioli defines its uniqueness and their white and red pizzas are unbeatable, simple yet unique. Once you taste the white pizza, perhaps with a thin slice of mortadella, you will want nothing else.
THE CAFÉ
Located next door to the delicatessen, the café in a gem in itself. The entry is a bit narrow but you forget this right way when you get swept away at the sight of so many multicolored pastries, so lovely they look as though they’ve been painted by hand.
And you can accompany them with an excellent coffee or creamy cappuccino. In the late afternoon you can have a cocktail or glass of wine sitting at the single bar while enjoying an unbelievable club sandwich or small “button” sandwiches. This is a place to relax and enjoy oneself in the wise hands of the Roscioli staff.
RIMESSA ROSCIOLI
Last but not least is the Rimessa Roscioli, their “after-hours wine and food club” where wine is in the limelight. Here you can eat and tastings are organized with producers who illustrate their products and there are also wine appreciation seminars on prestigious Italian and foreign wines as well as cooking classes. It is an authentic laboratory with many faces and sides that aptly completes the Roscioli brothers’ “foundry”.
