Designer Burgundy (2): Meursault (Blanc)

Today’s article takes us to Mersault, in the Côte de Beaune. While there are no Grand Cru areas here, there are 19 top quality Premier Cru ones. Among these here we have focused on Clos des Perrières and Perrières which together have around 13 hectares of vineyards divided into three micro-parcels: Aux Perrières (80a), Perrières-Dessus (3 ha 31 a) and Perrières-Dessous (8 ha 64 a).
We have attempted to give an overview of the legendary producers in this area, one that everyone agrees is not classified Grand Cru due to an historic ‘error’. It is a mystery to all why Mersault Perrières is not classified as Grand Cru, some say for tax reasons, considering that the best wines from this incredible cru are among the absolute best white wines and Chardonnay in particular. In fact, some equal, if not surpass, many wines from the ‘divine hill’ that is shared by Puligny and Chassagne.
The name refers to the stones found in the soil that retain the heat from daylight hours and keep the vines warm at night allowing their grapes to ripen perfectly.
