Designer Burgundy (1): Some great Chardonnay exponents

Like other great winemaking areas, Burgundy has its own quality classification based on an area’s historic propensity to develop characteristics related to the microclimate and the particular subsoil of the parcel in question. However, here in this blessed region the hand of the winemaker is so important it almost surpasses considerations regarding classification. In fact, certain winemaking artists can lift the quality of wines from secondary areas to the highest level or produce wines from top ranking areas giving them their personal ‘interpretation’ of the grape, making them more ‘legible’ and remarkable in regard to their territoriality.
T the only common denominator in the following panorama is the ability of the winemaker to express and bring out the best from the grape and the land where it was grown.
We begin with some great Chardonnay ‘interpreters’, those with a magical ability to transform this white grape into delicious and exclusive nectars, turning winemaking into an art form.
