The amber color has sienna-red reflections while the compact head is ivory-white. The intense and pleasingly caramel aroma has notes of malt, cookies, whole-wheat bread and dried fruit along with nuances of dried black cherry. The mouthfeel has a balanced bitterness thanks to a pleasing sensation of sweetness that embraces the returning ones of malt and caramel, which then include notes of dried fruit and cereals in the aftertaste. Overall very pleasing and with a subtle and delicate carbonation.
The brew is dedicated to the small island of Rathlin which has a bird sanctuary with over 10,000 marine birds including the puffin, which is depicted on the label. This pairs well with a classic lamb stew or some Blue Rathgore, a typical Country Antrim goat cheese with herbs.
