It happened Again!
Unfortunately, the criminal act that took place at the Case Basse winery in Montalcino a month ago was not an isolated incident. This time the victim was the Abraxas winery on Pantelleria, owned by former minister od Agricolture Calogero Mannino. Once again the barrels were opened and 700 hectoliters of prize Passito from various vintages went down the drain. A very serious act, a repeat of one that was equally as odious and that may have inaugurated a sad and dangerous criminal escalation against vulnerable structures like these wineries. The only thing that surprises me is that for this second episode there was not the same wave of sympathy and support we witnessed and took part in, as members of the trade press, for the first incident in Tuscany. Frankly, I can't explain it except perhaps because it happened during the holiday season. Nevertheless, I don't think this can in any way justify such a lower level of interest or outrage. For what it's worth, I would like to express the same level of my sympathy and support also to Calogero Mannino for his loss.
