DoctorWine turns five

If it had not been for the terrible news from Brussels and Catalonia, perhaps we would have celebrated Doctor Wine’s fifth birthday. Instead we will only mark it, in a much more sober way than we would have liked, at Vinitaly that kicks off on Sunday, April 10. In the past five years, DW has grown after its stuttering start, when we even had to shut down the site for a couple of months, after which we took off with even more determination.
There are far too many people we need to thank, too many names and too many circumstances. You can find them in the sections Who We Are and Authors, I would like to thank each and every one of them even if they only wrote for us once. Every contribution, even the smallest, embellished what we are doing and so was important.
Over time, DW has become an open, free area where those who want to contributed can do so, where we do not censure any opinion, as long as it is expressed in respect of the law and respects others, where we tackle questions related to wine in an in-depth and, I hope, never in a trivial way. We also never take anything for granted and try to approach various issues in an unbiased way, without ever pretending to know it all.
This same mentality is behind our Guida Essenziale ai Vini d'Italia, published by Mondadori, which this year also came out in an English version entitled The Ultimate Guide to Italian Wine that we published ourselves and which is having a discreet success.
We know you can’t change the world by writing about wine and for certain we have not discovered a cure for any disease nor published anything that can be considered great literature. However, we do what we can in the best way possible and, above all, with intellectual honesty. And I must say, even with a little surprise, that our readers take us seriously for that.
And it is they, whoever they may be, who I would like to thank, wishing them, at the same time, a Happy Easter.
