Wines for the summer 2023

Any tips to usher in the summer and start stocking up on warm-weather-appropriate wines? You can find them in the new guide "Vini per l'Estate 2023" by DoctorWine, and you can start making your own selections by attending the three presentation tastings that will take place in Milan on May 20, Naples on May 23 and Rome on May 28.

When we are preparing our Essential Guide to Italian Wine we taste many more wines than those which are included in that publication. This is because, by definition, it is an Essential Guide and the wines selected for it are those which are most representative of the wineries we have chosen. Each year there is also a turnover of wineries with some being left out only because that year they did not come out with one or more prestigious wines. Be that as it may, the fact is that many wines, valid as they may be, pleasing and with a good quality/price ratio, do not make it into the guide.

A few years ago, we thought it would be a good idea to come out with a series of booklets that would, in part, utilize all the work we had done and compensate the “also rans”. In this way we could also do justice to wineries that, all things considered, came out with excellent products but did not make it into the guide because we cannot include all wines we tasted but only those we liked the best, between one to at most five per estate (the latter for three-stars wineries). We then organized presentations for these booklets with public tastings and masterclasses that our reader public and sector operators and professionals appear to appreciate.

The next booklet is Wines for the Summer, now in its second edition, which will be presented first on May 20 in Milan, at our by now historic “location", the Principe di Savoia Hotel. This will be followed on May 23 in Naples, at Hotel Vesuvio, and then on May 28 in Rome, at Mama Shelter, Via Luigi Rizzo 20, near Viale Medaglie d’Oro. The hours for each event will be from 4PM to 8PM. In this latest booklet, we selected 348 estates and an equal number of wines. During the presentations we will offer around 100 wines for tasting, truly formidable wines and certainly more than fitting to be enjoyed during the summer season. This will be an apt way to usher in the summer, and perhaps even stock up on some good wines, and I hope it will be fun for all those who attend.
