Santa Maddalena in Rome

We continue to call it by its Italian name even if this has been replaced on the label in favor of the South Tyrolean name St. Magdalener. Nevertheless, the wine is the same and the producers’ Consorzio will be marking its 100th anniversary with a tasting in Rome organized in collaboration with DoctorWine.
On Monday May 8th, from 4pm to 8pm at the Trimani Wine Bar, on via Cernaia 36, in Rome, there will be a presentation of Santa Maddalena wines, with tasting tables and three seminars conducted by Dario Cappelloni and yours truly. It has all been organized by the Consorzio del Santa Maddalena producers’ association and DoctorWine.
I generally do not write about things we are involved in, an old habit perhaps more due to self-harm, I admit. This time I am making an exception because I adore Santa Maddalena wines, which are pleasing, affordable reds with a formidable drinkability. As many of you know, the wines are produced in Alto Adige (South Tyrol), in a hilly, almost urban area east of Bolzano, using for the most part Schiava grapes with a small addition of Lagrein. These are agile wines, easy to comprehend, and during the seminars we will try to demonstrate how they even age well, with participating producers (13 in all) bringing their latest vintage available plus one that has aged a few years.
The participating wineries are undoubtedly among the most representative in the area and the venue where this event will take place is the Trimani Wine Bar, one of the most emblematic for quality wines in the Italian capital. Plus, we at DoctorWine will be there to chat and taste wines with those who so choose.
We hope to see you there. Attendance is limited and you need to reserve a place by sending an email to roma-santamaddalena@
