Hard times

tempi duri

Some people think that Vinitaly should be postponed to 2021, the situation is so uncertain that it is difficult to make predictions.

Everyone is wondering how long this nightmare will last. And this includes those of us involved in the world of wine, in Italy and elsewhere, a sector the fate of which depends much on tourism, restaurants and commerce. We are all at a standstill and truly hope that this situation, for which at present there is no end in sight, does not last too long.

This is certainly not the time for polemics nor divisions. We must create a common front and demonstrate, as much as possible, solidarity and rigorously respect the guidelines that have been given to us. The only thing for certain is that, sooner or later, this will pass and we will then lick our wounds and move on. Hopefully, all the wiser for it.

We in the wine world are all in the same situation, and we must all row as far as possible in the same direction. That is why I would particularly like to comment on what is happening with Vinitaly, which, as you know, has so far been moved to mid-June. Giovanni Mantovani, General Manager of VeronaFiere, has sent a letter to all the producers explaining why, as far as possible, it would be appropriate to do so.

Many producers, President Matilde Poggi of the FIVI association and recently even President Piero Mastroberardino of the wine group in Federvini and of group Grandi Marchi, made a request to cancel it or remodel it. Surely the situation is very uncertain. There are reasons on both sides, and in my humble opinion it is not just a question of the possible "minor tone" of the fair. These are dramatically more serious events, for all of us and for the whole world.

If the battle were won, a great wine event would certainly be a great celebration. If, indeed. And nobody can say that for now, unfortunately.
