Sergioveto by Rocca delle Macìe

Created as an Igt Toscana at a time when Chianti Classico specifications had different restrictions than they do today, since 2013 Sergioveto has been Chianti Classico Riserva from a single vineyard. It expresses the terroir of origin very well.

Some time ago we happened to attend a vertical tasting of Sergioveto from Rocca delle Macìe at a convivial occasion in which other wines from the Chianti winery were also tasted. All the wines tasted are the offspring of a great terroir such as that of Chianti Classico and specifically that of the hills south of Castellina. The 1990 tasting of Sergioveto speaks of this vocation very clearly, and the same thing is perceived throughout the tasting when comparing climate and wine. But in the concept of terroir there is a fundamental component that is the work of man. 

Well: tasting the wines of the latest vintages produced, one perceives very clearly that something has changed. The wines turn out to have an elegance and refinement hitherto only hinted at. Elegance and freshness that are not matched by climatic changes, but neither by the soil, the location, the variety. Indeed, the latest Zingarelli generation has intervened with great acumen on vineyard management. In addition to a different working of the canopy, the number of bunches per vine has been increased, all intended to obtain less concentrated wines. The change can be felt unmistakably in the glass, and the 2018 vintage seems to be the first of a very promising new course, after a 2016 where some signs were already visible. 

Tasting the 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione "...They kept calling it Trinity" only confirmed this feeling.

100% Sangiovese. Matura in botti di rovere francese da 25-35 hl per circa due anni. 
Un vero grande Chianti Classico di razza e carattere, dotato contemporaneamente di struttura e di eleganza, pugno di ferro in guanto di velluto. Bel colore rubino denso, profumi articolati tra il floreale della viola e il frutto di amarena e prugna avvolti da una delicata speziatura del rovere. In bocca è pieno, denso ma scattante per una bella vena acida, tannino deciso ma fine e saporito. Grande eleganza. 

Going back to Sergioveto (in the first vintages the name was written staccato: Ser Gioveto), the wine sees its birth in a historical period in which the Chianti Classico disciplinary did not yet allow the use of pure Sangiovese or even the use of international grape varieties.  

Until the 2013 vintage, it is an Igt Toscana and is composed of 80% Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon plus 20% Merlot. After aging in barrique for 12 months the blend was made and the wine matured for a further period in large barrels followed by a year in bottle. As of the 2015 vintage it is classified as Chianti Classico Riserva Single Vineyard and is made from Sangiovese only. It is aged only in 25-35 hectoliter French oak barrels for the duration of 18-24 months. This is followed by 12 months in bottle. A wine for terroir dishes, great grilled red meats, roast game, pigeon in a pot.

Granato vivo e brillante, ha profumo profondo e complesso. Bella speziatura con pepe, chiodo di garofano e tabacco, ricordi minerali, cuoio, ciliegia morella. In bocca è sapido e scattante e si apre subito su note di cioccolato fondente poi si amplia nel finale molto lungo con sorprendente ritorno di frutto. Grande bottiglia, un vino sempre vivo e perfettamente godibile testimone di un grande terroir. 

Toscana Ser Gioveto 2000 

90/100 - € 30

Rubino con riflessi granata. Al naso ha intenso frutto di visciole, mora e mirtillo, cioccolato e spezie fini. L’annata molto calda si avverte al palato con una grande rotondità e calore alcolico appena moderato dalla vena acida. Si avverte il merlot con un frutto maturo e confettura di ciliegia. 

Toscana Ser Gioveto 2010 

91/100 - € 30 (assaggio in Magnum)

Rubino con riflessi granata. L’annata è più fresca e i profumi giocati su frutto rosso e note speziate con fondo di tostatura e cenere di camino. Largo e suadente, ben contrastato dalla freschezza acida. Si allarga molto nel finale cremoso. 

Chianti Classico Riserva Sergioveto 2015 

92/100 - € 25
100% Sangiovese. 18-24 mesi in botti da 25-35 hl. Rubino vivo e brillante. Il profumo vede in primo piano le note speziate del rovere con cardamomo e cacao amaro che lasciano poi spazio a una piacevole componente fruttata di prugna e amarena. In bocca ha una bella polpa piena e dolce con tannino scattante e levigato. Buon finale. 
 

Chianti Classico Riserva Sergioveto 2016  

94/100 - € 28

100% Sangiovese. 18-24 mesi in botti da 25-35 hl. Rubino denso. Ha un bel naso avvolgente, fruttato e floreale, poi spezie dolci e tostatura del rovere. Solido con buona estrazione, si sviluppa con decisione al palato con tannino molto importante e dolce. Finale lungo su frutto maturo. 

Chianti Classico Riserva Sergioveto 2018 

94/100 - € 25

100% Sangiovese. 18-24 mesi in botti da 25-35 hl. Rubino profondo e brillante. Gran bel naso floreale e fragrante, decisa espressione di frutto rosso fresco, garofano e spezie delicate. In bocca conferma una grande freschezza e piacevolezza di beva. Bella struttura avvolgente. Scattante e dinamico, ha una progressione continua su finale rinfrescante e lungo. Un vino tutto finezza ed eleganza, di ottima persistenza.
