Perillo’s Coda di Volpe in the first historical vertical tasting

Space for the white wine produced by Perillo with the native cold-loving grape variety of Irpinia: that Coda di Volpe in which the family has always believed.
To find bottles of Perillo's Coda di Volpe around! Especially the older vintages where you can grasp the solid texture of the wine, which time does not touch, but rather lets emerge those rock and iodine sensations that are part of the aromatic markers and that in youth remain subtended.
Michele Perillo and his sons Felice and Nicola (winemaker the former and agronomist the latter), have never ceased to believe in the great potential of this grape that loves the cold of the hills and mountains of Irpinia and has been used for years as a blending grape to balance the acidity of wines. Since 1970 it has been listed in the National Register of Vine Varieties and only since 1985 has it been vinified as a pure grape.
At Perillo's home, Coda di Volpe has always existed, present in Michele's historic vineyards in Castelfranci, amidst the snow and frost of the winter season that often occurs in contrada Baiano, at an altitude of 600 meters. Among the century-old vines of Aglianico, biotype Coda di Cavallo, here and there from spoked plantings one can make out elongated white clusters with very small berries of a yellowish-green hue, giving color to the red berry vineyard. An indigenous grape that marks the Irpinia territory as a favorite place to express itself and that at Perillo's is harvested starting at the end of October.
From the 2017 vintage, the wine changes pace. Felice's entry into the winery brings small and substantial changes, such as bringing the harvest forward by about 20 days and eliminating pre-fermentation maceration on the skins, while employing barrique for a few months on 20% of the mass, just to add character and substance to the wine.
Perillo's Coda di Volpe has tension, structure and recognizability. It is the blank expression of the family that by tradition and culture has been dedicated to wine for generations, where no compromise but the rhythm of the years concurs with the timeless beauty of Taurasi and Coda di Volpe.
